Tattoo Aftercare Must Know

It takes 2-3 weeks for a tattoo to heal completely. During that time, your skin does a lot of things to heal your tattoo — here’s what to expect and what not to expect.

  • Day 1: Taut, bright and fresh

  • Days 2-6: Oozy

  • Days 7-14: Scabby and flaking

  • Days 15-30: Fresh and clean but dulled art

A tattoo usually takes about 1-2 weeks to look fully healed, but takes another few weeks to be truly healed at all layers of the skin. The healing timeline can depend on the type of ink you get, the style, and the size. Different parts of your body have slightly different sensitivities and types of skin, which will affect how well they absorb the ink and how quickly they heal. Completely healing all the layers of broken skin can actually take up to 4 months, even though your tattoo will appear healed before that point. The healing process varies depending on a person’s immune system, ability to fight infections, and aftercare treatment, especially cleaning and sun protection.

Yes. If you're very sensitive, avoid choosing ribs, backs of knees, elbows, or groin areas for your first tattoo.

How do I care for my tattoo?

Leave your second-skin on as long as possible (up to 48 hours). Remove wrap in the shower and wash with warm soapy water. Wash your tattoo at least twice per day for at least two minutes. Rinse and pat dry with paper towel. Apply lotion with clean hands after wash and throughout the day. Repeat for two weeks. Don’t forget that your tattoo will weep when you first take off your wrap, so make sure you have something between you and whatever it touches and maybe a dedicated tattoo sheet for your bed.

Can I go swimming with my new tattoo?

No. Not yet. Tattoos are technically an open wound and should be care for the same. So there is no swimming for at least two weeks.

Can I get go in the sun with my new tattoo?

Wait at least two weeks to expose your new piece to the harsh sun. Try your best to keep it as covered as possible. Always make sure to use quality sunscreen and use a long term hydrating lotion.
