Create & develop at the hive
Over the past year attending Create & Develop meetups, local photographer and videographer Brendan has become a regular member of our artist community. He initially joined to listen and learn from our experiences running art businesses.
Brendan often films segments during our meetings to apply those lessons on professionalism and best practices to his own creative work. Recently, he captured footage for a video project during a special assignment at one meetup.
The unique assignment challenged each artist to showcase two photos: one representing their favorite personal project from the past year, and another of their own favorite image. Artists took turns presenting these photos to the group and explaining what drew them to each as their standouts.
Brendan's video documented the artists' presentations and discussions about their creative process and visions. It also captured them critiquing each other's selections and offering suggestions for improvement per the Create & Develop rule for constructive feedback.
The final video piece spotlighted the diversity of styles and perspectives among local artists while showcasing the supportive community at the heart of our meetups. Brendan was able to apply lessons on collaborative learning and uplifting fellow creatives through his own medium of filmmaking.
What is Create & Develop?
Create & Develop is a meetup group for local artists in the Salt Lake City area to come together and support one another's creative endeavors. Held at The Hive. Artists of all types - tattoo artists, painters, photographers, designers, etc. - are welcome to join.
The purpose of the group is to foster a community where artists can exchange ideas, critique each other's works, brainstorm creative solutions, and develop business strategies together. During the meetups, artists take turns presenting their latest projects, designs, or pieces of art to receive constructive feedback from the group. There is an emphasis on building each other up and helping one another improve.
When critiquing one another's work, attendees must provide suggestions for how the artist can get closer to their original intent. It is important first to understand the vision and aspirations behind the piece based on the artist's introduction and background. Then offer targeted feedback on composition, techniques, use of color, formatting, etc. that you feel could help advance that creative aim. The key is to offer constructive criticism and practical advice rather than subjective judgments.
In addition to facilitating artistic growth through collaborative critique, the meetups also provide space for networking, mentorship, and discussing best practices in areas like client relations, pricing, and marketing. More experienced artists are encouraged to guide up-and-coming creatives. The overall mission is to advance the local arts scene by supporting the professional development of independent and aspiring artists alike.
The collaborative atmosphere of Create & Develop enables visual artists across various mediums to exchange knowledge and push each other creatively.
