Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my tattoo appointment?

Tattoo chairs can be uncomfortable over long periods of time. Please come ready and try to be as comfortable as possible. Wear loose comfortable clothes. If you get cold easily, bring a small blanket. Be sure to eat something before your appointment. Feel free to bring entertainment: podcasts, music, and movies on your device. Don’t be afraid to bring pillows to prop yourself up. Friends are always welcome!

How much will the tattoo be?

We have a booking manager to answer any and all questions concerning booking your tattoo and payment options. Please follow the CONSULTATION & BOOKING link and answer the survey for a more in-depth and personalized experience. This way we won’t let anyone fall through the cracks. Please note that deposits will be taken per piece. Multi sessions have a 1-time deposit that will roll over until the last session is finished and then be taken off the final price of the finished tattoo. A typical deposit ranges from about 1/2 of the actual cost of the sitting. Every artist is different. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out through CONSULTATION & BOOKING.

Do I have to tip?

Our artists are friendly and accommodating by nature. They thrive on making sure you as the client have a unique and enjoyable tattooing experience. Many go out of their way to even make even the friends and family of each client relaxed and comfortable. Tips are pooled throughout each artist within the shop. So when tipping your artist will receive much of that generosity. If you choose not to tip and the experience was not a pleasant one, please let us know! As a shop, we are constantly trying to improve in all facets and want to be more than just your average street shop. We are a family here at The Hive, and want you to be a part of it!

Do you take credit cards?

Cash or Venmo payments are preferred. Credit card payments will be available during the appointment.

Is there a place on the body that is more painful to get tattooed?

Yes. If you're very sensitive, avoid choosing ribs, backs of knees, elbows, or groin areas for your first tattoo.

How do I care for my tattoo?

Leave your second skin on as long as possible (up to 48 hours). Remove the wrap in the shower and wash with warm soapy water. Wash your tattoo at least twice per day for at least two minutes. Rinse and pat dry with a paper towel. Apply lotion with clean hands after washing and throughout the day. Repeat for two weeks. Don’t forget that your tattoo will weep when you first take off your wrap, so make sure you have something between you and whatever it touches and maybe a dedicated tattoo sheet for your bed.

Can I go swimming with my new tattoo?

No. Not yet. Tattoos are technically open wounds and should be cared for the same. So there is no swimming for at least two weeks.

Can I go in the sun with my new tattoo?

Wait at least two weeks to expose your new piece to the harsh sun. Try your best to keep it as covered as possible. Always make sure to use quality sunscreen and use a long-term hydrating lotion.

Tattoo Aftercare Must Know

It takes 2-3 weeks for a tattoo to heal completely. During that time, your skin does a lot of things to heal your tattoo — here’s what to expect and what not to expect.

  • Day 1: Taut, bright and fresh

  • Days 2-6: Oozy

  • Days 7-14: Scabby and flaking

  • Days 15-30: Fresh and clean but dulled art

A tattoo usually takes about 1-2 weeks to look fully healed, but takes another few weeks to be truly healed at all layers of the skin. The healing timeline can depend on the type of ink you get, the style, and the size. Different parts of your body have slightly different sensitivities and types of skin, which will affect how well they absorb the ink and how quickly they heal. Completely healing all the layers of broken skin can actually take up to 4 months, even though your tattoo will appear healed before that point. The healing process varies depending on a person’s immune system, ability to fight infections, and aftercare treatment, especially cleaning and sun protection.
